The Double Degree in Law + International Relations at UAX prepares you to face the challenge of an increasingly international and globalised market for companies, with a commitment to new technologies, international placements and internships and company certifications.
You will be trained through Agile methodologies, you will receive strategic training in key disruptive technologies and you will be able to carry out international internships in strategic countries such as China, USA, Mexico or Germany, among many others.
The Double Degree in Law and International Relations trains jurists with a global perspective, capable of moving between international law, diplomacy and the political systems of different countries. It is a degree designed for those who want to practice law in cross-border contexts or work in international institutions, multilateral organisations and public administrations with an international outlook. It combines legal rigour with geopolitical analysis and an understanding of relations between states, which generates a highly specialised profile with little direct competition in the market.
The opportunities are very specific and highly valuable. You can work in diplomatic and consular careers, in law firms specialising in international law, in organisations such as the UN, the European Union, the International Court of Justice, the WTO or the International Criminal Court. There are also opportunities in international human rights NGOs, law firms with international arbitration practices, multinational companies in their legal departments, and in the Spanish public administration with international projection. It is a niche profile, but with very high employability in its field.
The Bachelor's Degree in International Relations prepares you for political analysis, development cooperation and diplomacy in the broadest sense, but without the rigorous legal training. The double degree with Law gives you the tools to practice as an international lawyer, provide legal advice in negotiations between states, interpret treaties or represent clients in international arbitration. If you want to work in the legal-international field - not only in the analytical field - legal training is essential and makes a huge difference in the functions you can perform.
It is one of the best academic bases for preparing for the Spanish Diplomatic Corps competitive examinations. The Diplomatic and Consular Corps requires passing a very demanding selection process that includes knowledge of law, international politics, economics and international law. The double degree directly covers most of the preparation syllabus. It does not guarantee access - the competitive examinations are very competitive - but it does give you an advantage over those who have only taken one of the two degrees.
English is absolutely essential, both for the development of the programme (many subjects are taught in English) and for working in any international environment. A second official UN language - French, German, Arabic, Chinese or Russian - is a differential value that can be decisive for access to positions in multilateral organisations. Universities offering this double degree usually have language entry requirements and language programmes integrated into the curriculum. If you are proficient in three languages by the time you finish, your profile will be multiplied in value.
The plan integrates subjects from both areas. In Law: Civil Law, Commercial Law, Constitutional Law, Procedural Law, Criminal Law and -particularly relevant- International Public and Private Law, European Union Law and Treaty Law. International Relations: Political Theory, Comparative Politics, Geopolitics, International Economics, International Security and Diplomatic Negotiation. Many programmes include Model United Nations (UN) simulations and international legal clinics, which offer highly valued practical experience in the sector.
The usual duration is 5 to 6 years, depending on the university. In that time you obtain the two official bachelor's degrees. The Bachelor's Degree in Law is also a prerequisite for access to the Master's Degree in Access to the Legal Profession, in case you want to practice as a lawyer in Spain. Many students take advantage of their international exchange period to spend time at a foreign legal institution, which considerably strengthens their profile in the eyes of future international employers.
It is one of the best academic options for access to European institutions such as the Commission, the Parliament, the Council or the Court of Justice of the EU. The European institutions recruit through open competitions (EPSO) that assess legal knowledge, analytical reasoning and language skills. The profile of the double degree aligns very well with these requirements. In addition, many graduates start as trainees in European institutions during or right after the degree, which opens doors to later permanent positions.
Salaries vary greatly depending on the job assignment. In the Spanish civil service (diplomatic career, State legal corps), salaries are competitive and stable. In international organisations based abroad - especially Geneva, New York, Brussels or The Hague - salaries can be very high, although access is very competitive. In the private sector, an international lawyer in firms with an international practice can start at salaries similar to those of other corporate lawyers (€25,000-35,000 junior) with a significant growth curve.
