New Curriculum 2026

The new curriculum is based on an innovative, highly practical academic programme, which integrates subjects that will prepare students for the future of medicine.

• What skills will you acquire?

You will develop skills in professional and cross-cutting values, the scientific foundations of medicine, clinical skills, critical analysis and research, communication skills and the doctor-patient relationship, public health and health systems, humanities, digital health, and more. All of this is delivered through a humanised approach to medicine.

The table below sets out the timetable for the implementation of the new curriculum (2026 curriculum), which is currently awaiting approval, as well as the timetable for the phasing out of the curriculum in force until then (2009 curriculum).

Objectives

To provide an introduction to the specialist English used in the Health Sciences and Medicine. Course description

The module is divided into three thematic blocks:

Block 1: Terminology specific to the Health Sciences

Block 2: In the consultation

Block 3: Medical records and other scientific texts

To cover the various modules, the following resources will be used:

*Videos of common conversations in general and specialist medical settings (Listening comprehension).

*Specialist texts on various conditions and fields of medicine to develop reading comprehension in both general and specialist medical contexts, as well as forms, medical records, printed materials, leaflets, instructions, etc. (Reading comprehension.)

*Linguistic structures most frequently used in general medical and hospital settings, including grammar and expressions (Collocations and Medical Terminology).

*Patient care skills covering moods, feelings, attitudes, concerns, vocabulary and expressions that enable healthcare professionals to better understand patients, leading to more effective treatment (Patient Care).

*Medical terminology covering various categories:

-Types of medication.

-The human skeleton.

- Organs.

-Key vocabulary used in the various

-Medical specialities, their staff and their organisation within

public and private healthcare.

-Key suffixes, prefixes and roots used in medical terminology.

-Key abbreviations in the medical and healthcare sector.

-Taking notes during a medical consultation, and drafting

to refer patients to medical specialities, and

compiling medical records from clinical notes.

based on their symptoms and thus be able to make an appropriate diagnosis.

Assessment system and criteria

Without prejudice to any other requirements that may be set out in the relevant course syllabus, as a general rule, failure to attend more than 70 per cent of the course’s teaching activities—which require the student’s physical or virtual presence—will result in the loss of the right to continuous assessment during the standard examination period. In this case, the examination to be held during the official period set by the University will be the sole assessment criterion, with the weighting specified in the course syllabus.

ASSESSMENT SYSTEM

The assessment process will be carried out taking into account the intended learning outcomes. To this end, assessments will be used that follow the learning process and capture the skills the student acquires as they progress.

These assessments aim to evaluate the four language skills (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written expression and oral expression), as well as the lexical and grammatical content necessary to put into practice the functional content to be achieved, in accordance with the level of the foreign language being studied.

These tests will consist of several of the following assessment activities, which will enable the extent to which the objectives have been achieved to be determined:

• Written composition tasks.

• Written tests involving filling in the blanks, true or false questions and answering

questions.

• Reading and reading comprehension exercises.

• Vocabulary and grammar exercises.

• Oral expression tests.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. REGULAR EXAM SESSION

1.1 Continuous Assessment

ONLY STUDENTS WHO ATTEND 70% OF CLASSES WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

a. An initial written test (mainly on vocabulary and terminology): 30%

b. An oral test (Doctor-patient Interview): 30%

c. A second written test towards the end of the term (case history, terminology, medical abbreviations, etc.):

30%

d. Class participation, attitude in class, work on the MURAL platform and on assignments set in class: 5%

e. Lecturer’s assessment: 5% – This 5% will be based on regular attendance at lectures.

The dates of these assessments will be announced by the lecturer in advance. They will take place in the usual lecture theatre, unless the lecturer specifies otherwise at the time.

1.2 Type of assessment

1.2.1 Written assessments

Written assessments will include questions on vocabulary, medical terminology, medical abbreviations, reading comprehension exercises, sentence completion, the drafting of medical histories or reports, prescriptions, treatments, etc., in written form, as well as medical questions aimed at identifying pathologies and making diagnoses, grammar, professional expressions and reading comprehension exercises.

Note 1: AT THE DISCRETION OF EACH LECTURER, the results of the oral continuous assessment tests may be carried over to either of the two final examinations in the ordinary and/or supplementary examination sessions within the academic year in question. The results of the written tests MAY NOT BE CARRIED OVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES FOR ANY OTHER EXAMINATION SESSION. Therefore, both continuous assessment and the ordinary and extraordinary examination sessions will have UNIQUE AND SPECIFIC written test results for each session.

Note 2: To pass this module through continuous assessment, students must have completed all three required tests during the term. If any one is missed, it will not be possible to pass the module through continuous assessment and the student must sit the examination during the ordinary or extraordinary examination period.

Note 3: In the case of students with an exemption who do not attend class, marks for class participation and the lecturer’s assessment (5% + 5% respectively) will be awarded depending on whether the student demonstrates an interest in following the course by making REGULAR enquiries to their relevant lecturer.

Note 4: Marks for class participation and the lecturer’s assessment (5% + 5% respectively) will only be awarded to students who attend at least 70% of the classes. In other words, students with a lower percentage of class attendance, or with unexcused absences, will not be eligible for marks in this area.

2. FINAL EXAM (REGULAR SESSION WITHOUT CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT AND SUPPLEMENTARY SESSION)

2.1 Final exam:

Students who have not completed the continuous assessment during the term or who have not achieved an average mark of at least 5 across the three tests (see 1.1) must sit the final exam in the subsequent February or July sessions. The assessment criteria in this case will be as follows:

Final exam: 100%

This is divided into:

Written section: 75%

Oral component: 25%

Type of examination

2.2.1 Written section

The written examination will include questions on vocabulary, medical terminology, medical abbreviations, reading comprehension exercises, sentence completion, the drafting of a medical history or medical report, prescriptions, treatment, etc., in written form, as well as medical questions aimed at identifying pathologies and making diagnoses, grammar, expressions and reading comprehension exercises.

2.2.2 Oral component

Students must prepare a doctor-patient consultation. Further instructions will be provided prior to the examination.

Note 1: AT THE DISCRETION OF EACH LECTURER, the results of the oral continuous assessment tests may be carried over to either of the two final examinations in the ordinary and/or supplementary examination sessions, within the academic year in question. Addendum

The course methodology will be primarily communicative and will require the active participation of students, whose knowledge will be reflected in various activities inspired by the Agile methodology. Among others, we will use platforms such as Mural, Nearpod and others.

To qualify for the continuous assessment mark, attendance at classes must be 70 per cent or higher.

Training activities

1) Lecture: Explanation of theoretical principles, using IT tools.

3) Supplementary lectures: group consultations offering guidance and answering queries, as well as monitoring of learning progress and/or theoretical presentations

Assessment system and criteria

Without prejudice to any other requirements that may be specified in the relevant course syllabus, as a general rule, failure to attend more than 70 per cent of the course’s teaching activities—which require the student’s physical or virtual presence—will result in the loss of the right to continuous assessment during the standard examination period. In this case, the examination to be held during the official examination period set by the University will be the sole assessment criterion, with the weighting specified in the course syllabus.

At the end of the semester, students will sit a theoretical and a practical examination.

The final mark will be calculated by taking into account the topics covered in lectures, practical sessions and seminars, as follows:

- 20% Theoretical component

If attendance is over 80 per cent, the assessment will consist of:

• 30% Assignment

• 30% Class activities

• 40% Online test

- 20% Seminars

In both lectures and seminars, if attendance is less than 80 per cent and/or the online assessment is a fail (below 5), the mark will be that obtained in the February exam, together with the corresponding continuous assessment of coursework and classroom activities. Otherwise, if attendance is 80% or higher and the online assessment is passed (5 or above), the student will be exempt from sitting the February exam, with participation and learning activities being considered part of the continuous assessment, which may improve the final mark.

- 60% Practical work

These will be assessed via a practical examination covering the practical content at the end of the semester

Addendum

To qualify for the continuous assessment percentage, attendance at classes must be 70 per cent or higher.

Faculty of Medicine

The lecturers on the UAX Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine practise at leading healthcare centres. In addition, we have simulation experts trained at technology schools in Boston. Norberto Herrera Merino
Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at UAX, he is a qualified doctor and specialist in gastrointestinal surgery, with a solid track record in teaching and research and extensive experience at Severo Ochoa Hospital.
María Victoria Redondo Vega
Head of Studies for the Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine. A Doctor of Medicine, specialist in Family Medicine and Coordinator of modules such as History of Medicine and Digital Health at UAX, she also directs the Master’s in Healthcare Management.
Alfonso Bermejo de la Calzada
Doctor of Medicine, gynaecologist and expert in assisted human reproduction, with extensive academic and research experience; he is the Postgraduate Co-ordinator and Head of the Medicine Centre at UAX.
María Del Mar Lasso De La Vega Zamora
Doctor of Medicine and specialist in Otorhinolaryngology, with over a decade’s teaching experience at the Severo Ochoa University Hospital and UAX; a researcher in ototoxicity and coordinator of the Otorhinolaryngology module.

María del Rosario Gómez Vadillo
Holds a degree in Veterinary Medicine and a PhD in Veterinary Sciences. She holds a Master’s degree in Event Protocol Management, Production, Organisation and Design. A lecturer at Alfonso X el Sabio University, she has extensive teaching and research experience in the fields of Toxicology, Biology and Forensic Medicine, with numerous publications and involvement in various scientific projects.
Esther Civantos Martín
PhD in Biology (specialising in Immunology) from the Jiménez Díaz Foundation, where she undertook her thesis on the characterisation and molecular cloning of Salsola kali pollen. She has carried out research in the fields of immunology, diabetic nephropathy and endocrinology, collaborating on projects such as Predimed Plus. With extensive teaching experience at various educational levels and on the UAX Master’s in Forensic Dentistry, she is currently a lecturer in Medicine, Dentistry, Biomedicine and Veterinary Medicine; she coordinates the Immunology module on the Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and is involved in a project on high-protein diets and the microbiota.

In addition, we have the heads of department from the medical and surgical specialities at the hospitals with which we have agreements. These experts will provide personalised training to each student during their clinical rotations.

Medical methodology and facilities in Madrid

The medical curriculum at UAX is based on practical activities that simulate real clinical situations of increasing complexity. To this end, we incorporate the latest technological advances in advanced simulation as a fundamental part of your training. Through simulation, we create controlled experiences to encourage students to reflect, learn, practise and engage in a process of continuous improvement.
Throughout the degree programme, as well as preparing you to become doctors, we train you for the MIR exam through workshops, tests and mock exams. MedPlus questions are incorporated into the exams for practice purposes (25 per cent of the questions in the MIR exam are taken from MedPlus). Furthermore, we provide study guides to help you prepare for the MIR and incorporate them into our teaching.
You will also have the opportunity to attend conferences and engage directly with leading specialists, such as the training delivered at UAX by: Jesús Porta Etessam, Head of the Neurology Department at the FJD and President of the Spanish Society of Neurology; Ana López, Head of the Medical Oncology Department at Severo Ochoa University Hospital; and Francisco Javier Gómez Pavón, Head of the Geriatrics Department at the Red Cross University Hospital.

Teaching units

Students of the Degree in Medicine at the Alfonso X el Sabio University carry out their studies in a series of hospital teaching units, each with its own characteristics that enrich their academic and professional training from the third year until the end of the degree. In addition, from the 5th and 6th year onwards, they undertake clinical training linked to Family and Community Medicine in different Primary Care Centres throughout the Community of Madrid.

North Teaching Unit: Villalba General University Hospital.

Located in the north of the Community of Madrid, the General University Hospital of Villalba is renowned for its modern infrastructure and innovative approach to healthcare. Here, students receive theoretical and practical training in the same centre, which facilitates full integration into hospital life from the very beginning. The rotations offered include Anaesthesia and Resuscitation, Cardiology, General and Digestive Surgery, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Traumatology, Geriatrics, Gynaecology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, Urology, Oncology, Intensive Care Unit, Neurosurgery and Maxillofacial Surgery, among other services.

Central Teaching Unit: San Francisco de Asís University Hospital and San José and Santa Adela Red Cross University Hospital.

Located in the heart of Madrid, this teaching unit stands out for the accessibility of its hospitals and for combining historic centres with modern medical resources. The theoretical part takes place at both the Hospital Universitario San Francisco de Asís and the Hospital Universitario Cruz Roja, while the practical part is carried out in all the hospitals that make up this unit. The specialities available include Allergology, Vascular Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, as well as all the fundamental medical and surgical specialities such as Cardiology, Neurology, Dermatology and Traumatology, among others.

Southern Teaching Unit: Hospital Universitario Severo Ochoa, Hospital Universitario del Tajo, Hospital Asociado Virgen de la Poveda, Hospital Universitario José Germain and Hospital Fundación Instituto San José.

The south of the region offers students an exceptional diversity in terms of clinical settings and training possibilities. Lectures are given in the lecture hall of the Severo Ochoa University Hospital, while practicals are distributed among the various hospitals and health centres in the area. Rotations in services such as Psychiatry (at the José Germain Hospital), Pathological Anatomy, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pneumology, Urology, Rheumatology, Oncology, and other key specialties, providing a broad and varied view of professional practice.

Chamberí Teaching Unit: Fundación Jiménez Díaz University Hospital.

Linked to the urban campus of Arapiles, right in the centre of Madrid, this hospital enjoys great national and international prestige thanks to its recognised healthcare and research work. Theoretical training is given at the University's campus at Arapiles 13, while practical training takes place entirely at the Fundación Jiménez Díaz. This centre offers outstanding specialities such as Cardiology, General and Digestive Surgery, Haematology, Nephrology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine, Preventive Medicine and Occupational Medicine, guaranteeing a complete and specialised training.

The choice of teaching unit is made through a rigorous process based on the preferences expressed by the students and their academic records, thus ensuring that each student can develop their clinical skills and interests to the maximum in an optimal environment. Once assigned to a unit, students remain in that unit for the duration of their clinical training, facilitating deep immersion and educational continuity essential for their professional future.

Admissions process

The Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine is aimed at students who hold a Baccalaureate, Vocational Training qualification or equivalent, who have passed the University Entrance Examinations (PAU) and are interested in developing their careers as doctors. The Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine at UAX has 240 places available for new students.

SPECIFIC ENTRANCE EXAMINATION FOR THE BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN MEDICINE

It consists of two parts:

Part One: Multiple-choice exam in Biology (30 questions) and Chemistry (20 questions).
Part Two: Personal interview

The marking criteria for the admissions process will be as follows:

Degree in Medicine

How many years is a medical degree?

If you wish to study for a degree in medicine, you should know that the duration of this degree is 6 years and 360 ECTS credits.

What to do after graduating in Medicine: Is the MIR compulsory?

After completing your medical degree, you can opt for the following career opportunities without the MIR: in the private sector, such as nursing homes, sporting events, private medical centres, research or military health care.

However, one of the most common doubts is whether the MIR is compulsory. The Medical Internship Residency Examination (MIR) is a test required to gain access to a position as a specialist doctor, and this training as a resident lasts an estimated 4-5 years. Once this time has elapsed, you will be able to practise your profession as a doctor in the National Health System.

Therefore, if your intention in studying medicine is to access the National Health System, the MIR is a mandatory requirement.

What specialisations can I choose for my medical degree?

By studying medicine at the Alfonso X el Sabio University you will be able to learn about the different specialties and find the one you are passionate about. In Spain there are 49 medical specialties divided into clinical, surgical, medical-surgical and laboratory specialties. Some of them are:

How to enter a medical career?

The recommended entry profile to study medicine is the Baccalaureate student, preferably in Health Sciences, with a passed EVAU.

What are the medical internships at UAX?

When studying the UAX medicine degree you will have to carry out increasingly complex internships from 1st to 6th year in the UAX Virtual Simulation Hospital. Beginning in the first years with basic examinations, interpretation of X-rays, auscultations, etc... until the 6th year, when you tackle highly complex multidisciplinary clinical cases.

In the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years, practical sessions are carried out in the laboratory and in the dissection room (Anatomy subject). Visits are made to the Forensic Anatomical Institute, the National Court and the Higher Sports Centre. At the HVS they will carry out procedural training as many times as they need to train skills and abilities. They will also have online practice with Practicum Script (Clinical Reasoning software to train decision-making). Up to 49 practical workshops

From 3rd year onwards, you will choose a Teaching Unit in a hospital to carry out your clinical placements. You will be able to do rotations in more than 38 specialities and services, to discover the area you like best.
