The menopause marks the beginning of a stage of life known as the climacteric. Although it is not a disease, in most women it causes troublesome symptoms that disrupt their social and working lives. The data published in the WHI study led to the discontinuation of hormone therapy, which was accompanied by the closure of the Menopause Units that had existed until then; this in turn meant that training in this field is virtually non-existent in our country, both in the fields of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and in Family and Community Medicine.
