Degree in Pharmacy

The Pharmacy degree programme in Málaga is designed to meet the current needs of the pharmaceutical sector, combining a solid grounding in science and healthcare with innovative content geared towards new areas of professional development within the profession.

Through a practical and applied approach, you will acquire the skills needed to pursue a career in both community pharmacy and areas linked to the pharmaceutical industry, clinical research, healthcare management and business development.

Our educational model places the development of students’ skills at the heart of the learning process. Through practical experiences, applied projects and tackling real-world challenges, you will develop analytical, critical thinking and decision-making skills, which are essential for addressing the current challenges facing the pharmaceutical profession.

The programme combines scientific knowledge with experiential learning and collaborative work, fostering the progressive acquisition of technical, clinical and professional skills from the very first years of study

• We train professionals capable of carrying out the specific activities of the profession, such as the preparation, control, dispensing and counselling on medicines, thereby contributing to disease prevention and the restoration of health.
   
• An innovative curriculum closely linked to professional practice, featuring distinctive modules not typically found in traditional Pharmacy programmes, such as Pharmaceutical Marketing, Clinical Trial Monitoring and Management, and Organisation and Management of the Pharmaceutical Industry. These subjects will enable you to develop skills that are in high demand in fields such as clinical research, the pharmaceutical industry, management and business development.
   
• A flexible teaching approach and small class sizes, making it easier to balance your studies with professional commitments. Practical sessions are held in small groups, with close and personalised attention from teaching staff. In the laboratories, there will be approximately one lecturer for every 15 students, encouraging individualised support and more active participation.
   
• In your fifth year, you will be able to undertake your supervised work placements not only in Málaga but anywhere in Spain, thanks to our network of agreements with pharmacies and companies in the sector.
   
• You will study innovative modules aligned with current trends in the pharmaceutical sector. Furthermore, we enhance your professional and international prospects through the ‘Modern Language I and II’ modules.
   
• Cross-disciplinary approach: at UAX Mare Nostrum, we offer related health degrees and an approach based on interdisciplinary collaboration across different healthcare disciplines, preparing you to work in multidisciplinary teams such as those you will encounter in your future career.

Facilities

• Simulation Pharmacy and professional management software

The Simulation Pharmacy allows students to practise in an environment that closely mirrors the professional reality of a pharmacy.

Using specialised pharmacy management software, you will learn processes relating to the dispensing of medicines, pharmaceutical care, stock control, order management and the resolution of practical case studies, developing both clinical and management skills from the very first years of your degree.

• Anatomy Laboratory    

An anatomy laboratory equipped with anatomical models of all the organs and systems of the human body, an electrocardiograph, a spirometer, an audiometer, a podoscope, a X-ray viewer, a weighing scale and height rod, eye charts and a biofeedback system.    

It is also equipped with a full range of audiovisual teaching aids, including a wealth of visual material relating to the morphology, structure and function of the human body and the stomatognathic system.    

• Biological Laboratories    

The University has laboratories for Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biological Analysis, Pharmacology and Microbiology.

These laboratories are equipped with technology used in real-world biomedical and pharmaceutical settings, including CO₂ incubators, microplate readers, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, optical, fluorescence and inverted microscopes, PCR systems, DNA and protein electrophoresis equipment, autoclaves, laminar flow cabinets and −80 °C ultra-low temperature freezers.

Furthermore, students work with advanced scientific equipment such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) systems, transilluminators and other tools used in research, analysis and pharmaceutical control laboratories, gaining practical experience in technologies found in industry and biomedical research.    

• Physics Laboratory    

This laboratory is equipped with the standard basic equipment for physics practicals, the main items being: wire bridges, oscilloscopes, sound level metres, teslameters, tables and beams, He-Ne lasers, microwave ovens, electromagnets, Coulomb balances, viscometers, spring pendulums, optical benches, spherometers, torsion pendulums, calorimeters, dilatation apparatus, and all the accessories required for carrying out laboratory practicals.    

• Chemistry Laboratory    

Separate areas have been designed: one for general chemistry, organic and inorganic synthesis, with an instrumental analysis room; and another focused on learning about industrial-scale processes and chemical technology. They are equipped with storage facilities, loading bays and a gas supply centre, as well as standard consumables, UV spectrophotometers, diode arrays, gas chromatographs, liquid chromatographs, rotary evaporators, vacuum pumps, drying ovens, muffle furnaces, pH meters, conductivity meters, meters with specific redox electrodes, fume cupboards with two workstations each, an infrared spectroscopy system, granulators, centrifugal evaporators, calorimeters, magnetic stirrers, melting point apparatuses, Mettler balances, Parr pumps, metering pumps, etc.   

• Advanced technology for pharmaceutical training

Practical experience is complemented by specialised resources for anatomy, histology and clinical simulation, including microtomes, histological sections, anatomical models, anthropometric equipment, and virtual reality and augmented reality tools for immersive practical sessions.

Thanks to these facilities, you will develop high-level experimental, clinical and professional skills, familiarising yourself from the very start of your degree with the technology used in pharmacies, hospitals, research laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry.

When studying pharmacy in Málaga, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake a supervised six-month ( 660-hour) work placement during your final year, choosing whichever pharmacy you prefer anywhere in Spain. We have agreements with over 300 pharmacies where you can carry out your work placement.

You will have the opportunity to take part in mobility programmes and international experiences that will allow you to expand your network of contacts, gain experience in academic and professional settings in other countries, and develop intercultural skills that are increasingly valued in the pharmaceutical sector.

Furthermore, the University’s close collaboration with companies, hospitals, laboratories, pharmaceutical cooperatives and healthcare institutions facilitates students’ contact with the various areas of professional development within pharmacy, such as community pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry, clinical analysis, biomedical research, pharmaceutical distribution and healthcare management.

This connection with the professional world is reinforced through initiatives such as Congress Day, an event at which leading figures from the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields share their experience and introduce students to the various career paths available to graduates of the degree programme. Furthermore, throughout the degree programme, you will take part in seminars, workshops, field trips and activities led by practising professionals.

Thanks to these experiences, you will gain first-hand insight into the various branches of the profession, build a network of contacts from the very first years of your studies, and shape your career path before you graduate.

Conduct research alongside lecturers and research groups from your undergraduate degree onwards

Research forms part of the educational experience at UAX Mare Nostrum. Our teaching staff are actively involved in various research groups and projects linked to fields of great relevance to pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences, such as microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, biotechnology and innovation in healthcare.

Furthermore, the University promotes new lines of research and research groups in which students can undertake academic projects and their final-year dissertations, gaining exposure to scientific methodology and the sector’s current challenges from an early stage.

Research activity is complemented by multidisciplinary innovation initiatives, such as 3D printing projects applied to the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields, which enable students to participate in the development of solutions with real-world applications in teaching, research and healthcare.

Among the research areas in which academic staff are involved, projects relating to the human microbiome and antimicrobial resistance stand out, such as those carried out by the MICRO-RES Group.

All those interested in studying for a degree in Malaga must take an entrance exam.

The tests last approximately one and a half hours and consist of the following:

Competence test: TCAP©- Test of Academic and Personal Competences. The competences of the candidate are evaluated through standardised and scientifically endorsed psycho-technical and personality tests with an estimated duration of 60 minutes.

Language test: English test for candidates with Spanish mother tongue and Spanish test for candidates with non-Spanish mother tongue. The estimated duration of the online test is 30 minutes.

Candidates with a non-Spanish mother tongue will be required to have a minimum level B1 of Spanish, regardless of the language certificates they present.

At the end of this degree, the graduate is a professional qualified to:

• Understand and apply the principles of chemistry, biology, pharmacology and pharmaceutical technology in the quality assurance of medicines and other health products.
• Evaluate, dispense and advise on the safe and effective use of medicines and pharmacological therapies.
• Perform functions in the production, control and quality assurance processes in the pharmaceutical industry.
• Contribute to pharmaceutical and biotechnological research, including clinical trials and development of new drugs.
• Integrate into health care systems with clinical communication skills and ethical responsibility.

International mobility in the Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy is a strategic element for the student's academic and professional development, as it facilitates contact with different healthcare systems, pharmaceutical care models and research and innovation environments.

Studying at a foreign university allows students to broaden their knowledge in areas such as clinical pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical technology and biomedical research, as well as becoming familiar with the regulations and professional practices of other countries.

This experience fosters fluency in English and other languages, the ability to adapt, autonomy and work in multicultural contexts.
