The ‘Updates and Innovations in Pulmonology’ programme will address the most relevant aspects relating to the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of the most common respiratory diseases in the population. The main aim is to achieve an early and accurate diagnosis of these conditions, so that appropriate treatment can be implemented and the quality of life of those affected can be significantly improved.

The teaching programme is structured into five modules, each with these key objectives.
 

Bronchial Asthma
 

  • To review the pathophysiology of asthma.
  • To understand the diagnostic options for asthma.
  • To update therapeutic approaches.
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with severe asthma.
  • Understand the most common comorbidities that may influence asthma control.
     

COPD
 

  • To acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to practise medicine in a scientific and up-to-date manner, taking into account the latest scientific advances, in order to provide multi-level care for patients with COPD tailored to their risk factors.
  • To contribute to specific knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects relating to the risk factors for COPD.
     

Respiratory infections
 

  • To update knowledge of the most relevant concepts regarding the main infectious diseases of the respiratory system.
  • To understand the importance of clinical assessment in pulmonary infections and its implications for patient management, including in A&E and in primary care.
  • To acquire the knowledge necessary to manage the most common respiratory tract infections correctly
     

Respiratory disorders during sleep
 

  • To understand the pathophysiological basis of OSA.
  • Understand the diagnostic methods for OSA, as well as the most common diagnostic alternatives.
  • To understand how CPAP devices work and how to use them effectively.
  • To understand the medico-legal issues involved in the diagnosis of OSA in certain professions.
     

Addressing smoking
 

  • Throughout this module, the aim is for students to reflect on the importance of smoking on health, to understand the epidemiology of smoking, the diseases associated with tobacco use, how to make a diagnosis, and how we can help our patients to give up smoking.
